WINTER BARLEY 2014

NOTES ON VARIETIES

RECOMMENDED

KWS CASSIA:  A moderately early maturing British feed variety with high yield potential. Short straw with good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown. Moderately susceptible to mildew and Rhynchosporium. Good resistance to brown rust and net blotch. Very good grain quality with a very good hectolitre weight.
•    Cross: (Eden x Carat) x Saffron

LEIBNIZ: A moderately early maturing six-row German feed variety with very high yield potential. Long straw with good resistance to lodging and moderate susceptibility to straw breakdown. Moderately resistant to mildew with good resistance to Rhynchosporium and net blotch. Susceptible to brown rust. Moderate grain quality with a reasonable hectolitre weight (grain quality of six-row are generally inferior to two- row varieties).

SAFFRON: A moderately late maturing British feed variety with high yield potential. Short straw with very good resistance to lodging and good resistance to straw breakdown. Susceptible to mildew and Rhynchosporium. Good resistance to brown rust and net blotch. Very good grain quality.

VOLUME: A moderately early maturing hybrid six-row British feed variety with very high yield potential. Long straw with moderate resistance to lodging. Susceptible to straw breakdown. Moderately resistant to mildew and brown rust. Good resistance to Rhynchosporium and net blotch.
Small grain size with a good hectolitre weight (grain quality of six-row are generally inferior to two-row varieties).

Winter Wheat  Seed

AVATAR:   A very high yielding British variety with a moderately long straw and moderate resistance to lodging but good resistance to straw breakdown. Moderately susceptible to mildew with moderate resistance to Septoria spp. Moderately susceptible to sprouting. Grain of  feed quality with good hectolitre weight.

CORDIALE:    A British variety with very short straw and very good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown.  Moderately resistant to mildew and susceptible to Septoria spp.  Early maturing variety with good resistance to sprouting.  Grain of good bread-making quality suitable for all applications. High hectolitre weight and Hagberg Falling Number.

EINSTEIN:    A British variety with moderately short straw and good resistance to lodging and very resistant to straw breakdown. High thousand grain weight and good hectolitre weight.

PROVISIONALLY RECOMMENDED

DUNMORE:     A British bred variety with moderately long straw, moderate susceptibility  to lodging,  and good resistance to straw breakdown. Moderatlely late maturing. Moderate resistance to septoria, mildew and fusarium. Good resistance to yellow rust. Moderate resistance to sprouting. Grain of feed quality with a relatively good hectolitre  weight.

KWS LUMOS:    A British bred variety with moderately short straw, very good resistance to lodging,  and moderate resistance to straw breakdown. Very good grain quality, with a low thousand grain weight and a very good hectolitre weight.

RECOMMENDED

GRANARY:     A British variety with moderately short stiff straw. Moderately resistant to Septoria spp, moderately susceptible to mildew and limited data suggests it has good resistance to yellow rust.  Moderate milling and baking quality.

Oats Seed

WINTER OATS 2014

*    Based on trial results from 2011, 2012 and 2013.
•    Yields are expressed as a percentage of the mean of Barra and Husky (100 =  8.2 t/ha @ 15% moisture content).
**      All varieties are spring varieties trialled in winter. Prolonged severe frost or harsh winds can seriously damage spring varieties sown in winter and may cause drastic reduction in yield or even crop failure.

RECOMMENDED

BARRA:       A moderate yielding Swedish variety. Moderately late maturing. Susceptible to lodging and straw breakdown. A spring type variety with very  good grain quality.  Very susceptible to mildew and susceptible to crown rust.

CROPTON:      A British variety with high yield potential. Moderately tall straw with moderate resistance to lodging and moderate susceptibility to straw breakdown. Good resistance to mildew and moderately resistant to brown rust and net blotch. Moderately susceptible to Rhynchosporium.
