Founded in 1998, directors Kevin Cooney and Walter Furlong have between them over 50 years’ experience in the agriculture sector, covering seed, grain and fertilisers.

Walter Furlong Senior

Managing Director

Walter Furlong is the Managing Director of The Cooney Furlong Grain Company. Walter is the owner of Walter Furlong Grain, an arable farm based at Dranagh, Co. Wexford, which is a significant supplier to the brewing, malting and distilling industries. In addition, Walter is the Managing Director of Target Fertilisers which has grown to become one of Ireland’s leading importers, blenders and wholesalers of quality fertilisers in Ireland.

Walter Furlong Junior

Sales Manager

Walter Furlong Junior joined The Cooney Furlong Grain Company, having graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree from Dublin Business School, along with a Green Cert from Kildalton College. Walter’s role involves trading and hedging the grain and the purchasing of animal feedstuffs as well as seasonal work on Walter Furlong’s Grain Farm. Walter’s other role is in Target Fertilisers where he is Area Sales Manager for Munster and deals with merchants and Co-ops in that area.

Maeve Furlong 

Purchasing Manager

Maeve is the Purchasing Manager for the Town and Country stores and manages the Wexford store specifically. Maeve also coordinates the marketing and events activities for all companies within the group, including The Cooney Furlong Grain Company, The Cooney Furlong Machinery Company and Target Fertilisers Ltd. As part of her keen interest in all things equine, Maeve completed The Irish National Stud Breeding course at the Irish National Stud and Gardens, in Co. Kildare and has travelled and worked on some well-known stud farms in Ireland and Kentucky. Maeve joined the team at The Cooney Furlong Grain Company in 2010 and has since completed a Farm Business Management course in Kildalton College, in Co. Kilkenny.

George Blackburn

Sales Manager

George Blackburn is a Sales Manager and Agronomist for The Cooney Furlong Grain Company and is responsible for management of combinable crops in relation to seed chemicals and soil fertility recommendations. He is also responsible for the purchasing of agrochemicals for the group and subsequent formulation of chemical and fertiliser programmes for the sales team to roll out to the customers. George holds a first-class honours degree in Animal and Crop Production from University College Dublin and is also an IASIS certified plant protection advisor.

Emily Doyle

Logistics Manager

Emily Doyle is a Logistics Manager at The Cooney Furlong Grain Company site in Caim, Enniscorthy. Emily worked four harvests as a lab technician before joining full time in 2018. She is now responsible for logistics of grain, seed and fertiliser as well as chemical and seed stock control. Emily graduated from University College Dublin in 2018, with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree, majoring in Animal and Crop Production

Philip Kennedy

Area Manager – New Ross

Philip Kennedy is Area Manager for The Cooney Furlong Grain Company in New Ross, working closely with customers in South Kilkenny and Wexford to help maximise their farming efficiency and profitability. Philip is a Ruminant Nutritionist, advising customers on diet formulations and feed solutions. He also specialises in crop protection for cereal, root crops and grass as well as soil health and fertility. Philip holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree, majoring in Animal and Crop Production and he is also an IASIS certified agronomist.

James O’Neill

Branch Manager – Enniscorthy

James O’ Neill is Branch Manager for The Cooney Furlong Grain Company Enniscorthy. With over 14 years’ experience in the agriculture industry, James manages the running of the branch and the milling of grain. Responsibilities also include providing advice to customers on livestock nutrition and animal health.
